The 2007 Regatta

Once again we will be holding the St George's College Regatta down at the Boat Club in nearby Walton-on-Thames.

The date this year will be Monday, 2nd July 2007.

I have been in touch with Mike Rosewell who may be a familiar name to some of you! He is hoping to attend the 50th Anniversary Dinner for the Boat Club on the 16th June 2007 and advised me that he has found the Murtough Cup! This is the Cup that was given to the winning team in the OG races back when he was working at the College.

Sign up for this year's regatta and you could be part of the winning team of OGs/OMs that will be presented with the Murtough Cup.

Tamryn Reynolds (OG '04) report on last year's regatta has been included below.

The 2006 Regatta by Tamryn Reynolds

The 2006 College Regatta was my first time back as an Old Georgian. Thankfully we were racing in eights so there was no chance of a repeat experience of our disastrous race of 2002. (when Vicky Nunn (04) and I competed in a double against Kiera Welman (04) and Emma Kipling (04) and tipped the boat and fell in on the finish line!).

Major improvements to the Boat club include a TV and sofas in the ‘break’ area. Far more entertainment compared to what we had! There is clearly an increased number of girls rowing, highlighted by the new event ‘fathers vs fourth year daughters’ which was fun to watch.

It was good to catch up with old faces who are still rowing (and coaching) at St Georges as well as the Old Georgians. I was particularly impressed with those who hadn’t been rowing for more than 30 years but still came down to participate! This encapsulates the essence of the day .............. just a bit of fun!

As race time approached old rivalries and a keen competitive spirit surfaced. We made up two eights with the help of a few college students.

My boat (boat one) was slightly younger and coxed by the legendary Matt Bird (03). During the warm up we practised some starts and readied ourselves for the 500 metres awaiting us.

The banter between the crews at the start line made it obvious both were determined to win! Mr Nicolas started us off and unfortunately boat two gained a slight lead. We fought back all the way down the course maintaining a rate of 42 to be just beaten on the line! It was a close race spurred on by the cheering from staff, students and parents on the bank. I thoroughly enjoyed the day and will definitely try to be there next year!
