St George’s College unnerve Aussie Hockey Champs
28th March, 2007
St George’s College in Weybridge took host to current Australian National Hockey Champions, Como Secondary College of Perth, in a game played last Monday that finished 4-2 to the Aussie champs.
The touring Australian team were taken right to the wire by St George’s in a fixture that took the breath away. It was a marvellous spectacle of free-flowing attacking hockey, which was reminiscent of the great Australian Olympic teams of days gone by.
The pulsating encounter had both teams throwing caution to the wind with each side taking it in turn to lay siege to the opposition’s penalty area, before Como took a late lead to seal the match.
St George’s dominated large portions of the match - taking the lead twice through Dan Smith and Graham Cox respectively. However, pressure mounted on St George’s as Como defended stoutly waiting patiently for their opportunity to strike back.
The second period saw St George’s introduce their developmental side who held out well until Como eventually sealed the match through a superbly taken drag flick.
Head of Hockey, Jonathan Williams, said: “It was a truly inspiring game that will live long in the memory. The penultimate goal scored by Como was worthy of deciding any match. We look forward to hosting many more games like this.”
