St George’s rowing legacy continues

13th June 2007

It has been a bumper month for the rowing teams of independent Catholic School St George’s College in Weybridge. The Girls’ J16 team won gold and the Boys J16 team won silver medals for the National Schools Regatta while the Senior Boys Octo and the Boys J14 eight won their heats at the Walton and Weybridge Regatta.

Having recently also won the National Schools Time Trial in Spring and the National Schools Head last month the Girls J16 team were ecstatic to get a hat-trick at the National Schools Regatta.

In the final, the St George’s College girls were up against other top rowing schools - Lady Eleanor Hollis, Headington and Kingston Grammar School - and still went on to win in an exciting race. The girls dropped off at the start and then settled into their race pace earlier than the other crews. As the other crews stepped down into their race pace, St George’s started to pull through a foot at a time. By 600m, the St George’s crew was just in front holding off a number of pushes by other crews and finally won by three quarters of a length.

The boys’ race was also tight. St George’s beat off rivals Westminster and George Watson to win the silver just missing out on gold to Evesham who won by four feet.

Success did not end there and the Senior Boys Octo beat Walton Rowing Club at the recent Walton and Weybridge Regatta. This is a major achievement for boys rowing. The boys won by a boat length and had taken the lead by 300m.

“This year celebrates the 50th anniversary of St George’s Boat Club and these wins ensure the schools rowing legacy continues,” said Head of Rowing at St George’s College, Gareth Walters.
