St George’s girls tennis team qualify for National Championship Finals

12th June 2007

After just three matches, independent Catholic school, St George’s College, Weybridge, first girl’s tennis team has qualified to play in the National Schools Championship finals - the Aberdare Cup taking place from 9th - 13th July.

The team, made up of Antonia Peart (Captain) Josie Inverdale, Honor Lansdell, Juliette Inverdale, Leah Bramwell and Zoë Dearsley, played just three matches out of a possible six in a round robin regional qualifying draw. Wins over Kingston Grammar School, Cheam High and Newstead School have meant that St George’s is now ranked as the best girls’ team in Surrey. It will be St George’s that represents the county at this prestigious event.

The team beat KGS comfortably 6-0 in the first round, thanks to strong performances from Josie Inverdale and Antonia Peart. In the third round (second round bye) the girls defeated Cheam who are considered one of the strongest teams in Surrey, 5-1. The fourth round saw St George’s defeat Newstead Grammar 5-1, in a closely contended match.

“Queenswood School in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, is the setting for this year’s final tournament. Twenty- four boys (who will play for the boys Glanville Cup) and girls’ teams participate each year from across the country. This is the blue ribboned event in schools tennis. St George’s has reached the finals twice before and we are looking to the privilege of representing Surrey.” said Ed Fry, Head of Tennis.
