ST GEORGE’S COLLEGE STUDENT WINS CAMBRIDGE SCHOLARSHIP
Following an intensive 4 day period of interviews and auditions, Anthony Fort (Upper Sixth student) has been awarded one of the highly sought after Organ Scholarships at Cambridge University. In September 2009, Anthony will take up a place to read Music at Girton College, where he will also be the College’s Organ Scholar. This will mean that in addition to his own studying and work on his degree, he will also play for the Chapel Services at the College, choir rehearsals, services, tours and broadcasts.

Winning this award has been made all the more impressive in the fact that when Anthony went to the “Organ Trials” as they are called, in September, he had actually only been playing the organ for 10 months. Tansy Castledine, St George’s College Director of Music, recalls Anthony’s decision to try for an award. “Anthony came to me asking if it would be a good idea for him to try for a Choral Award. Whilst he’s a competent singer I was also aware that he was a very fine musician all round and that he already possessed many of the skills required of an organist. That’s why I suggested it, and whilst he thought I was a little crazy at the time, he took to it like a duck in water! His tenacity, drive and hard work have all paid off and I am thrilled with his appointment. He will be a huge asset to Girton College”.
Anthony is currently the Senior Musician and Repetiteur at St George’s College, Weybridge, where he plays for the major choirs and accompanies many of the students in concerts. He will be touring with St George’s College Chapel Choir to New York in the October half term week and can be heard playing the organ and accompanying the choir in their pre-tour concert on Thursday 18th October at St James’ Church, Weybridge. Whilst in New York the choir will sing in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Trinity Church in Wall Street and at the United Nations (sponsored by the UJ Mission).
