St George’s College student achieves third place honours at public speaking competition.

Jack Percival, a Lower Sixth Form student at independent Catholic school St George’s College, Weybridge, beat 14 other Surrey-based students to achieve third place in the provincial heat of the Catenian Association’s public speaking competition.

Jack’s speech ‘Global Warming - a 21st Century Myth’ was received positively by the judges for its controversial nature and Jack’s powerful delivery technique.

Honours

Held annually, this national competition is for fifth and sixth form students from Catholic schools. The topics are chosen, researched and written by the students who then give a speech in front of judges and fellow participants.

The Catenian Association is an international brotherhood of Catholic business men who meet socially to advance the interests of members and their families through lifelong support and friendship. It was founded in 1908 in Manchester and has more than 10,000 members in 250 branches in the UK and overseas.

“At St George’s College, we encourage students to participate in events that develop life skills, build confidence and put into practice the knowledge learnt in the classroom. This contest provides a great opportunity for students to develop a wide range of skills in a competitive and challenging forum. “Through the Association’s charitable initiatives, students can receive career advice, mentoring and funding for community projects from the Association. St George’s College is proud to support such a premier event and we extend out congratulations to Jack for an outstanding achievement,” said Mrs Rowlatt, Head of English at St George’s College.
