Golf Fixtures for 2008
OLD GEORGIANS
GOLF SOCIETY
Dear Member
Our fixtures for next year are:-
- Hayling Island GC - Tuesday 6 May 2008
- New Zealand GC - Friday 11 July 2008
- Match v Chislehurst GC - TBC
- Hindhead GC - Wednesday 10 September 2008.
Please put these dates in your diary!
As I look back on this season, although attendances at New Zealand and Hindhead were disappointing, our performance in the Grafton Morrish, has really put the Old Georgians' Golf Society on the golfing map. Our team Captain Tony Jansen reports:-
The Team of Tony Jansen (Capt), Tim Clarke, Aidan Neill, Chris “Hagred” Collins, David Collins, Robert Pugh and Dale Johnstone, represented the Old Georgians at the Finals weekend in early October. Initial disappointment following a second round defeat was dispelled when on the Sunday the team won the Committee Bowl.
Following a bye through to the second round on the Friday the team lost a very close match against Sherbourne. Tony Jansen and Tim Clarke losing on the 20th hole having held a commanding lead after 12 holes.
All first and second round losers were entered into the Solihull Salver to be played on the Saturday morning with the top four teams qualifying for the Committee Bowl on the Sunday. The team qualified fourth and on the Sunday easily out played Bedford school winning 3-0 to meet Solihull, past winners of the Grafton Morrish Trophy, in the Final.
Three closely contested matches were played. David Collins and Robert Pugh won the first match on the seventeenth, Chris Collins and Dale Johnstone lost 3 and 2 leaving Tony Jansen and Tim Clarke to fight it out for the last point. Tim and Tony held a two hole lead coming down fifteen, this lead was whittled down to all square by the time they reached the 18th tee. A halved hole following a sporting conceded putt by the Old Georgians sent the game down the 19th. A regulation par 4 in front of a huge gallery was enough to beat the Solihull pair.
Congratulations to all who played, and especially to Tony Jansen our Captain for a wonderful victory.
It is nice to report that at our three meetings this summer, different members were prize winners.
- Hayling Island GC, for the John Wilson Bowl. 1st Martin Derrick, 2nd Bobby Burns, 3rd Francis Hughes.

- Hindhead GC, for the St George’s College, Weybridge Cup. 1st Adrian Macarty, 2nd Pip Clothier, 3rd Chris Reynard.
The match against Chislehurst GC was narrowly lost, but as usual a great day was had by all.
My thanks to our outgoing Captain Brian O’Gorman, and to our three match managers, Tim Lawrence, Robert Lee and Chris Hennen.
Our Captain for the next two years will be Francis Hughes.
Yours sincerely
Bobby Burns.
