St George’s College Opens the Doors of its New Theatre

Parents, Students and Staff at St George’s College were excited to take part in the opening of the Schools new Amanda Smith Theatre.

The Theatre was opened on 7th February 2008 by Andy Smith and named in memory of his wife Amanda who died whilst their son Jack was a pupil at the Junior School, Jack is now at the College. The project was made possible by donations from both the Amanda Smith Foundation and the St George’s College Parents Society.
The new Theatre space has taken seven months to complete and was constructed in the old 1930’s School Hall.
The new facility includes a foyer area with bar and a main theatre with 185 retractable seats. It boasts state of the art lighting and sound rigs with full audio visual and projection facilities. It is a multifunctional space which can also be used for dance, social events and exhibitions.
After the official opening the first School production took place in the Theatre. Students performed ‘Thyestes’ by Seneca. The production was directed by Mr. Mark Schofield, Head of Drama and the music was by Anthony Fort, a Sixth Form Student.

Mr. Mark Schofield, Head of Drama said “It is fantastic that we now have a state of the art facility and that our Students are given the chance to work in such a professional theatre space”.
