Cricket - MCC

The 1st XI played the MCC yesterday and were without 8 regular players. The team included 5 debutants including two 3rd Yr boys James Smith and Max Garvey-Windrich.
The boys bowled brilliantly at the MCC with Nick Kent (captain for the day and did a great job) and Rory Snowball piling on the pressure early on with Nick finishing with 3 wickets and Rory bowling 12 overs for just 18 runs. Max Garvey-Windrich took two catches and two stumpings but it was James Smith who stole the show. He was the youngest on the field but still bowled 11 overs of very good off spin to end with 3 for 39. The MCC were bowled out, which does not happen very often, for 174 and in reply St George’s were 143 for 9. Harry Samuels top scored with 37 and 2nd XI Captain Tom Rowland (on debut) scoring 35 before Adam Hackett and James Smith managed to bat out the last three overs to draw the game.
The MCC have only been beaten three times in over 50 years so it was a fine effort by the boys.
Two highlights of the game:
- James Smith taking his first wicket with his arms in the air before the catch had even been taken! He did bowl remarkably well for a 3rd Year in a 1st XI match.
- James Hart taking a sparkling diving catch plus, to everyone’s amazement, a second catch after the ball had been hit high in the air he managed to juggle it six times before he eventually caught it to end the MCC innings.
In other games the U15C beat Hampton (a rare win for any team against them) by just 4 runs. The U13C and U12C’s lost narrowly to Kingston GS B teams.
